Bio

Rob Heuer is in his fifth year at SMU, serving his entire tenure as the Assistant AD for Compliance at SMU. He handles and executes strategic planning initiatives, and will serve as the sport contact for the Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving teams, Men’s and Women’s Tennis team and Women’s Volleyball team.

In this role, Heuer develops and oversees strategic planning, Identifies initiatives to maximize athletics compliance efficiencies, manages institutional governance review and response, manages technology resources, pinpoints and facilitates professional development opportunities and prepares the office’s Quarterly Reports presented to the SMU President.  He also serves as the day-to-day liaison for the American Athletic Conference, Governance & Legislation, Sport Psychologist, Sports Medicine, and Strategic Planning.

Heuer arrived at SMU in December 2013 from the University of Akron, where he served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance and was a member of the department’s Senior Management Team from August 2010 to November 2013. In that role, Heuer was the Senior Compliance Administrator, overseeing the Compliance program for the Zips’ 19 athletics programs.  In addition to leading the department’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) efforts, Heuer served as the sport administrator for the swimming and diving program.

Prior to Akron, Heuer served as the Rules Education Coordinator for the University of Colorado from September 2007 to August 2010.  During his time in Boulder, Heuer built a comprehensive rules education program for the Buffaloes.  In addition to his Compliance duties, Heuer was the administrator for the CU Cheerleading, Dance and Mascot programs from 2008-2010.  CU’s mascot “Chip” won two UCA National Championships during his oversight. 

Before joining the Buffs, Heuer was the Assistant Compliance Director at Marshall University, where he oversaw all Compliance-related issues for the Thundering Herd’s 13 Olympic Sport programs.  Heuer’s time in Huntington began in May 2006 as a Compliance Graduate Assistant before assuming his full-time position in April 2007 and completing his Master’s of Science in Sport Administration at Marshall in May 2007. 

A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Heuer graduated with his Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska in December 2005.  He worked in various roles in the athletics department as an undergraduate student, including Football Recruiting Operations and Communications.  Additionally, Heuer was a member of the Nebraska Cheerleading team from August 2002-December 2005. 

Active nationally, Heuer is a member of the Division I Interpretations Committee and the National Association for Athletics Compliance.  He is currently a member of the NAAC Professional Development Committee after serving on the NAAC Convention Committee from 2009-2017, including four years as chair from 2013-2017.
